The Origin

Reading Florence's Growth

The idea behind this publication began with historical maps of Florence — watching, layer by layer, how the city grew across centuries. Not by a single master plan, but through incremental adaptation: streets widening where movement demanded it, districts thickening and thinning, a fabric that behaved less like a finished object and more like the growth pattern of a living system.

That observation led toward Japanese Metabolism, and Kisho Kurokawa's attempt — sixty years ago — to design buildings explicitly as organisms, with structures and parts on different lifespans. From there, toward the wider body of research this publication investigates: the growing overlap between architecture, biology, systems theory and emerging technology.


The Idea

A Framework, Not a Claim

The Living Cities does not claim that buildings are literally biological organisms. Characteristics of living systems — metabolism, growth, response to stimuli, adaptation, homeostasis — provide a framework for investigating where architecture may be heading, as sensing, artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology give buildings capacities once exclusive to biology.

The long-term question is whether architecture can evolve from something that primarily consumes and separates us from natural systems, toward something that actively participates within them.

The Mission

The Living Cities researches, evaluates and connects real evidence (Explore), argument (Ideas) and knowledge (Library) into one ongoing investigation — prioritizing credible sources and original interpretation over content volume. Not every project marketed as "sustainable," "smart" or "biomimetic" earns a place here: the standard is what a project or piece of research actually does, not how it is described.


Editorial Approach

How This Publication Works

Sources are prioritized roughly in this order: peer-reviewed research, universities and research institutions, original papers and official project documentation, books by recognized researchers, and — only where useful — quality journalism and commentary. Claims are traced back to their original source wherever possible, and emerging technology is classified honestly by maturity rather than presented as more established than it is.
