Yangang Xing

At the time of the 2018 mycelium-brick study, Dr. Yangang Xing was based at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, working with collaborators at Aberystwyth University's Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) and Damietta University, Egypt. Dr. Xing is now an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University, within its Construction Management group — confirmed directly on NTU's staff page.

Dr. Xing's work sits at the intersection of building physics and bio-based material research. The 2018 mycelium-brick study is one of the few pieces of published research testing mycelium composites specifically as insulation, providing a measured, laboratory-controlled data point alongside high-profile structural demonstrations like Hy-Fi.

Co-author of one of the more rigorous early lab studies measuring actual thermal performance of a grown, fungal-bound building material — a useful counterweight to more promotional coverage of mycelium construction, since the paper is explicit about its own preliminary status and testing limitations.
